How do we change bad habits?
Recently I discovered some new pointers to how we can affect short and long term change in our lives, and it’s Neuroscience based. One line of theory would suggest it lies within the mind-body question: which is stronger in driving behaviour?
One school of thought suggests that our bodies dictate 95% of our behaviour and our mind only 5%, suggesting that the reason it is so hard to change behaviour is that our bodies are driven by chemical balances and that the body then resists change. This works if you consider an addiction, be it tobacco, alcohol or even Chocolate! Ever tried to stop? Our body craves for it more. It’s the same with emotions. Emotions create chemical changes in our body, which we then become used to, making it hard to change. So we can become addicted to stress and anxiety just as we are to actual substances. This is why CHANGE CAN BE SO HARD, our bodies fight it even when our mind wants it.
So how do we overcome the bodies resistance to changing behaviour? We must learn something NEW. Only when we learn NEW things does our mind take back control from your body. It puts the mind in charge again, creating new neural connections in your brain. So to change an old behaviour you must learn a NEW behaviour. You must acquire new knowledge, creating a new way of doing things. Let’s take an example. Say you are fearful of doing budgeting, and every time you try you procrastinate because you don’t like doing it. So how do you change? You have to immerse yourself in new knowledge/information about why you should budget. You need to convince your mind with new reasons why you must change the behaviour.
